A Good Dressing Down

I found this wave-printed tuxedo jacket (last seen here) at a TK Maxx in Glasgow on the sale rack about two years ago. I had originally paired it with skinny jeans and a white button-down, but I think I like it much better this way, with flares (they're in again...yesss!) and a white tee underneath. I think the proportions are a bit better like this. At least, they are for me.

I am in love with the print on this jacket. Not only does it fit like a dream, but you just don't see anything like it floating around out there. I sort of feel like a Vegas lounge lizard in it; it has just the faintest hint of a velvet Elvis about it. That's why I prefer to dress it down with jeans, to keep it from taking itself too seriously. You know, like smoking jacket and ascot seriously...although personally, I can find nothing potentially less serious than a smoking jacket and ascot combo. It makes me giggle. Sure, you see plenty of people out there doing it, either "ironically" or in earnest, but every time I see someone in a smoking jacket and ascot, I have to fight the urge to run up to them yelling "Professor Plum! Professor Plum! It was Colonel Mustard! I saw him do it! In the library, with the lead pipe!"

At which point I'll probably get arrested.

So. Jeans then.

  1. Great mix of dressy/casual, Kristin. I agree, a smoking jacket with ascot is giggle-ish. I think of The Lady's Man from Saturday Night Live with his Courvoisier. xo

  3. My deep thought? I love your approach to dressing - don't take it too seriously. This jacket is wonderfully unique and you wear it fantastically well. It almost makes my eyes googly, which is a good thing! I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear an ascot and smoking jacket in seriousness, or even joking for that matter. I'm in Vancouver after all...

  6. I think you have developed your style into what's can be called "truly YOUR style" kind of thing. It looks better that way than two years ago. It's about the proportions, you are wright.

  9. What a fabulous jacket! You look great. I'm looking for casual jackets (or jackets I can wear casually) and I'd snap that one up if I saw it on a mega-sale (or in a charity shop).
